Abstract

Abstract Background and Objective: Carbohydrates are considered as the major source of energy in physical activity. Studies show that consumption of carbohydrate foods before exercise can balance blood glucose and free fatty acids and increase athletes’ performance. In this study , we compared the effect of three kinds of foods with different glycemic indices on blood glucose (BG) and serum free fatty acids (FFA) in cycling ,male athletes. Material and Methods: In this clinical trial, 21 members of national cycling team randomly allocated to three equal groups of glucose (low glycemic index) ، lentil (low glycemic index) and potato (high glycemic index). First, Fasting blood samples (5ml) were obtained to measure BG and FFA . Then the subjects were asked to eat their foods. After 45 mins of rest, they pedaled with maximal oxygen consumption VO2max) for two hours and again their blood samples were taken to compare with the levels of before interventions. Results: Glucose consumption resulted in a significant decrease in FFA level after 2 hours of pedaling (P = 0.01) but no significant change in BG level. Plasma glucose was higher after eating lentil than that of potato (P<0.05), but it was not true for FFA level of both groups. Conclusion: based on the results, the pre-exercise use of low glycemic index (lentil) compared to high glycemic index (potato) can better lead to increased blood glucose during exercise. Abstract

ABSTRACT
         Background and Objective: Vibrio is a genus of bacteria that are widely distributed in aquatic environments. The genus includes several important pathogens that endanger farm animals and humans who ingest seafood or water contaminated with the bacteria. Virulence of Vibrio spp. is regulated by ctxAB and tcpA genes. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Vibrio spp., and tcpA and ctxB virulence genes in isolates from surface water and salt water samples collected from Golestan Province, Iran.
          Methods: Overall, 115 water samples were collected from the Caspian Sea coast, lagoons and rivers in the Golestan Province. The samples were filtered by membrane filtration method, and enriched in alkaline peptone water with 1% NaCl. The isolates were grown on TCBS agar, and identified by biochemical tests. Presence of the tcpA and ctxB virulence genes was investigated by polymerase chain reaction.
          Results: In this study, Vibrio alginolyticus was the predominant species (38%) isolated from the seawater and surface water samples, followed by Vibrio parahaemolyticus (23%), Vibrio harvei (15%), Vibrio fluvialis (14%) and Vibrio damsela (10%). The virulence genes were not detected in any of the isolates found in the study.
        Conclusion: This study indicates that V. alginolyticus is the most prevalent Vibrio spp. in surface water and seawater samples collected from the Golestan Province, Iran.

Abstract

Background: Diabetic nephropathy is a major cause of kidney failure. The current study aimed to measure serum and urine albumin, as well as other biochemical markers, in individuals with type 2 diabetic nephropathy and to identify rapid diagnostic approaches in these patients.
Methods: This case-control study included 40 patients with diabetic nephropathy and 40 diabetic patients without nephropathy as the control group. Clinical parameters were assessed. After biochemical analysis and based on the ratio of random urine albumin to creatinine, patients were divided into two groups: those without albuminuria and those with microalbuminuria. SPSS version 18 software was used to analyze the results.
Results: In diabetic patients, the levels of urea, creatinine, and uric acid were significantly higher compared with the control group and were 64.68±46.84, 2.01±1.82, and 5.35±2.23, respectively. The average serum albumin content in diabetic patients with nephropathy was notably lower than that in patients without nephropathy (3.74±0.88 and 4.35±0.28, respectively) (p < 0.05). In patients with diabetic nephropathy, urinary albumin had a direct relationship with serum creatinine level (r=0.347, p=0.028). In the control group, serum albumin status could be assessed by measuring creatinine (r = -0.305, p = 0.056), urea (r = -0.333, p = 0.036), and HbA1C (r = -0.376, p = 0.017).
Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that high urinary albumin levels in patients with diabetic nephropathy have a direct association with serum creatinine levels, indicating a useful marker for evaluating nephropathy patients with albuminuria. However, further studies with larger numbers of participants are required.
